GREAT REVIEW

The Musical Society, in common with most Societies all over the thirty two counties, compete for awards in the A.I.M.S. competition. An Adjudicator visits Shows all over the country and submits a report to the Society, and later makes nominations for lots of categories. The report for FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, staged in early March, was reviewed on Monday, 2nd. March. The Adjudicator was more than generous in his comments, finding little, if any faults, in what he described as “Liam Butler’s clean, unfussy production which served the piece admirably”.  All aspects of the Production received favourable comment, from Principals, Chorus, Dancers, the Production Team of Liam Butler, Director, Fergal Carroll, Musical Director, Mary Mc Donagh, Choreographer, and Catriona O’Dwyer, Chorus Mistress, to the backstage team of Sets, Costumes, make-up and hair, props, Stage Management, Lighting and Sound.  The report went through all Principals, finding little if any fault in any, from leading roles to individual characters in the ensemble. Summing up in a sentence “ a really fine evening of musical  theatre”. Nominations will be announced on Sunday 24th. May during the A.I.M.S. Choral Festival. The Musical Society will present the Concert THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT on the Saturday night in St Michael’s Theatre, New Ross, having staged it in the Strand Theatre in Carrick on the previous Wednesday and Thursday, 20th and 21st  May.

Reminder of the Good Friday BINGO in aid of the Strand Theatre Restoration Fund. Hopefully the FULL HOUSE  sign will be up on the night. A night full of fun, prizes and Easter eggs will be enjoyed. Don’t miss it.

EASTER BINGO

This Friday, Good Friday, sees the Strand Theatre host the Musical Society BINGO. Lots of prizes and plenty of craic will be the order of the night. Fun guaranteed. See you there.

Many members visited Thurles, last week, to see an excellent JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, directed by Tony Finnegan. The Carrick Society has staged  SUPERSTAR twice, so it is the favourite Show of many members. Tony Finnegan has directed two Shows, recently, in Carrick, JEKYLL AND HYDE and THE WITCHES OF EASTWICK, so is a favourite Director of his many friends in the Cast. All in all, it was a great visit, enjoyed by one and all.

Rehearsals commenced on Wednesday of this week for the May “Hits” Concert THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT, to be staged on 20th. and 21st. May in the Strand Theatre, and in St. Michaels Theatre, New Ross, on Saturday 23rd. May, during the A.I.M.S. Choral Festival. Rehearsals continue next week, with ladies on Wednesday at 7. 30.p.m., and men on Thursday again at 7. 30.p.m. It will be a short run-in, with a minimum of rehearsals, so all participants are urged to attend.

The Musical Society extends GET WELL WISHES to long time member Amy Gough Power, who is currently in hospital. Amy has soldiered with the Society since the 1950s, in the Chorus, as leading lady, and latterly, supplying the invaluable “cuppa” at rehearsals and during the Shows. The Society instructions to Amy is hurry back, we miss you.

DEVASTATING NEWS

The sudden death of John Stuart on Tuesday of last week was greeted with shock and disbelief, not least by his friends in the Musical Society. Society members sang as John’s remains were brought to St Nicholas’ Church on Saturday evening last, and assisted the Suir Valley Choir at the Easter Sunday funeral Mass. May he rest in peace.

As a mark of respect, the Society cancelled last week’s rehearsal. There was three rehearsals tis week on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, in preparation for THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT, to be staged in the Strand Theatre on Wednesday and Thursday 20th. and 21st. May, and in St. Michael’s Theatre, New Ross, on Saturday 23rd. May, during the A.I.M.S. Choral Festival.

The Easter Bingo on Good Friday evening in the Strand Theatre was a great success. A capacity crowd enjoyed the fun. No doubt, the Society will repeat the dose shortly.

LIFE GOES ON

After the trauma and shock of the sudden death of John Stuart, the Musical Society was back to busy rehearsals last week, this week, and for the next few weeks. It’s just over three weeks to curtain up on the Society’s 90th Production THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT, to be staged in the Strand Theatre on Wednesday and Thursday, 20th. and 21st. May, and in St Michael’s Theatre, New Ross, on Saturday, 23rd. May, during the A..I.M.S. Choral Festival. Our indefatigable Chorus Mistress Catriona O’ Dwyer has been running Principals and Chorus through their melodic paces. Catriona has divided rehearsals, taking sopranos for a period, then altos, on one night, and then tenors and basses, on their own, on another night. It will make a mighty sound when they all come together. Principal vocalists, of course, take their own time, to ensure all the “Hits” will sound at their brilliant best, with numbers from from Die Fledermaus, Les Miz, Pinafore, Mamma Mia, La Mancha, Me and My Girl, Joseph, Chess, Jekyll and Hyde, Aspects of Love, Fiddler, Miss Saigon, Carrie, and a dash of Panto to add variety. It will be a classic programme with plenty of comedy thrown in for good measure. Musical Director Fergal Carroll will conduct a full Orchestra to compliment the brilliant singers. Don’t miss it, it’s going to be awesome !. Booking is now open at the Strand Theatre Box Office 051 645050 and credit card facilities are available.  With only two performances locally, demand will be high. Rush.
